Course Description

Therapeutic Engagement and Supportive Observation is an intervention by which staff engage with
a patient to develop a therapeutic relationship, offer therapeutic intervention and to reduce risk to
the patient and others on the ward. The purpose of therapeutic engagement and observation is to ensure the sensitive monitoring of the behaviour, mental state, safety and well-being of people receiving inpatient care, enabling a rapid response to any change, whilst at the same time promoting positive therapeutic relationships.

Course duration: Up to approx. 2 hours, dependent on learner’s skills and abilities.
