The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) was developed to improve the detection
of and response to clinical deterioration in adult patients with acute illness. NEWS is
a recognised and validated tool. The original NEWS was published by the Royal
College of Physicians (RCP) in 2012, with an updated version (NEWS2) being
released in 2017.
NEWS2 is a simple aggregate scoring system in which a score is allocated to
physiological measurements. Six physiological parameters are measured:
Respiration rate
Oxygen saturation
Systolic blood pressure
Pulse rate
Level of consciousness or new confusion
Temperature
